| The homage to the legendary driver from Mantua returns once more, an event that enthusiasts of historic sports cars from all over the world haven’t missed for 20 years |

August 11, 1953 - the death of Tazio Nuvolari aroused great commotion around the world. The news came like a thunderbolt, even in Brescia and deeply struck the men of the Mille Miglia - Giovanni Canestrini, Renzo Castagneto and Aymo Maggi who, with Franco Mazzotti - who died during the Second World War - conceived and developed the “most beautiful race in the world.” The establishment of the Gran Premio Nuvolari, in 1954, arose from the feelings of admiration and recognition for Nivola, the driver who contributed most to the fame of the race. It’s a special chronometric test over 132 kilometres through the Po Valley, starting in Cremona, transiting through Mantua and arriving in Brescia.
Since 1991, it has been transformed into a re-evocation and there are famous names in its Roll of Honor, including that of Ascari. The 2010 edition of the Gran Premio Nuvolari, a race in stages for historic vehicles registered between 1919 and 1969, will start on Friday, September 17th from the suggestive Piazza Sordello in Mantua. The title will be contested by 300 teams, half of them from all over the world, over a distance of 1000 kilometers. The Gran Premio Nuvolari has become one of the most followed appointments by sports enthusiasts, and also a social occasion for the owners of historic vehicles, following a route which is one of the most beautiful in northern Italy.
The race, which starts and finishes in Mantua, has intermediate stages in Pisa and Rimini, crossing Parma, Siena, Arezzo and Ferrara, and skirting some of the architectural masterpieces of Italy. The race is now the second regularly held race in the world for the number of teams and the kilometers covered; and the first for technical difficulties and number of chronometrical tests. It is also a “can’t miss” race for fans of historic cars all over the world. The beauty of the vehicles competing, the glamour of the teams and the clothing all contribute to making the days of the Gran Premio Nuvolari unforgettable. Side events, called “Aspettando il Gran Premio Nuvolari” (Awaiting the Gran Premio Nuvolari) have grown up around the sporting event which enhance it with parades through the streets of the city and exhibitions of vehicles.
